I’m about sick and tired of gluing this damn headliner. I used a sloppy amount of glue this time to the point that I was having issues peeling it back to replace it.
I also glued it back up around my visor lights.
Hopefully this holds until we get the time to take the whole headliner down and put new fabric on it all nice and tight. Same with the fabric piece that sits under the moonroof which has some sag to it.

The only thing that will fix it is a new headliner

Yeah, I know. Hopefully this will at least work temporarily.

I attempted to do mine a couple of times and failed miserably. So I took it to an upholstery shop and threw down $80 to get it done right.

Just going to tell you that it’s a bitch and a half trying to get the headliner out without damaging it and the compacted fibers that it’s made from makes it impossible to glue on. I lucked out and found a gently used one that wasn’t sagging and put it in.

My w123 mercedes has a bow looking thing that keeps the shape at the curve in the back. It apparently has rubber stoppers at each end to hold it. Mine is disconnected and I am scared to mess with the perfectness of the rest of it. So it sags a bit back there. Headliners are scary!

Greeat. Maybe paying a shop to do it would be better.

It takes a certain skill to not fuck them up for sure.

In my area you can get it done for under $200. The bmw doesn’t like to be taken apart and the factory roof is a PITA to pull apart and put back together but all in all it’s probably easier to pay someone.
Otherwise you’ll have to get a few cans of 3M spray adhesive, a few abrasive wheels, and just spend the day stripping the old foam off. Luckily the fabric is super cheap. ~$4 a yard or so. We get big rolls of it for ~$80 wholesale at the shop and each is enough to re do about a dozen cars.

Sagging headliners suck! I had a w202 a couple years ago that was only held up by a bungee cord across the grab handles (previous owner). Took it out and re-did the thing myself. Not fun, but not that bad either, and I’m TERRIBLE at upholstery. Found all of the materials online for about $100. Did it in charcoal suede, pillars included. I say go for it, you’ve already tackled everything else yourself!

Same thing happened to mine after the first summer in Texas.
It’s really not THAT hard to get it out of the car, but you do need to be careful not to bend it too far and crease it.
I pulled the fabric off, scrapped/rubbed the foam off, and took it to a shop to get it recovered properly. Cheaper that way, but still professionally done.
